Of course I couldn’t keep posting about Iceland and not share the great places to go for food, so here we are! I’ve found the best options for local eats and healthy food and am excited to share it all with you guys now.

Reykjavik

Glo Iceland

This is an amazing place to get healthy and affordable food! There are several locations within the ‘downtown’ area so it’s very accessible and there’s always a huge selection of fresh salads, veggies and fruits. The desserts are also incredible with lots of raw, vegan and gluten-free options. I would highly recommend this place to anyone with dietary restrictions or concerns as it’s one of the healthiest places to eat in all of Iceland!

Ban Thai

This was my absolute favourite place to eat in all of Iceland. It was recommended by our guide as one of the best local places to eat and we were seriously not disappointed. There are over 100 items on the menu and each and every single item is handmade fresh to order. This of course puts a bit of a longer wait time on your food, but I promise it’s worth it. The best thai food we’ve had – ever. The layout of the restaurant is really cool as well, at first glance when you walk in it appears small with only one open dining area, however you will come to find the restaurant is actually a converted house with various dining rooms on the first and second floor. It allows for privacy without feeling entirely secluded. Highly, highly recommended.

 Kaffi Brennslan Cafe

This was the very first place we tried when we arrived in Reykjavik. It was about 8am, we hadn’t eaten anything in quite sometime and were running on empty. You should also note that not a lot of places are open in Iceland at 8am in the morning.. luckily this cafe was, so we entered and to our amazement found tables of people enjoying homemade waffles and coffee. Perfect. We were able to enjoy a lovely brunch with some oh-so-good coffee before we continued with our day. It’s right on the main shopping street, Laugavegur, so you can’t miss it!

Lemon

This was another hip and cool place to get healthy meals and smoothies. So. Many. Smoothies. They pride themselves in offering fresh ingredients and have a large menu of smoothie, juice and breakfast items. This is also a great place to get Iceland’s famous Skyr yogurt. If your looking for something easy, affordable and healthy I’d recommend getting a smoothie from here!

 Cafe Loki

The wonderful staff at Blue Lagoon Hotel recommended we try this place if we wanted to experience traditional Icelandic food, so we just had to go! When we arrived, well.. we were a bit surprise.. by the smell. Traditional Icelandic food is a lot of seafood dishes, including fish mash and rotten shark. I’m not lying when I tell you the place smelt like rotten seafood but we stuck it out and ordered the Icelandic pancakes. When the food arrived it was very similar to Crepes in Canada, so we very much enjoyed it but kept the visit short and sweet. Needless to say the resaurant was very busy and many people did try the more… exotic items on the menu.

Grindavik

Papa’s Pizza

This was actually the only place we ate at in Grindavik, but it was delicious! The staff at the Blue Lagoon Hotel recommended it to us and also informed us they offered the best fish and chips around so we just had to go visit. When we arrived it was quite busy, a seat yourself environment and very laid back atmosphere. We very much enjoyed our time there.

There you have it! Lots of great healthy options and fun places to try in Iceland.

Have you been to any of these places in Iceland? What were some of your favourite restaurants?

xx HBL
