For me, Iceland is a land of magical wonder. It’s incredibly beautiful, in every. single. way. I’ve never had such an amazing experience in a country before. The landscape will constantly keep you in awe, there are too many waterfalls to number, it’s so green and vibrant. I just can’t. So I’ll share my experience travelling to Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss as well as Fraser Canyon (Fjaðrárgljúfur in Icelandic) in hopes it inspires you to book your next trip there.
First stop: Seljalandsfoss
This beauty of a falls is one of the most photographed and visited in all of Iceland. It’s easily accessed from the main ‘ring’ road and you’re able to walk up close, around and behind it for some pretty epic photo ops. We visiting at the end of August so the weather was still ‘summer’ but the mist and spray back from the falls made it a bit cold (hence the layers on layers and hat!). It’s an absolutely stunning waterfall. To walk behind it and almost feel cocooned in its power is just so surreal and amazing. I’d definitely recommend visiting this falls if you get the chance.
Next stop: Skogafoss
You can literally walk right up to the base of this waterfall to soak in its beauty and power. It’s another popular location with on site camping (and there were lots of tents!) and paid washrooms. It makes for a perfect pit stop and of course you’ll have may more photo ops at your disposal. My husband walked right up to the base of this one and said afterwards that it literally took his breath away. I believed him as I stood much further back and experienced a similar feeling of awe. It’s a gorgeous falls and is also very accessible off the main ring road.
Final Stop: Fjaðrárgljúfur (Fraser Canyon).
Please please please drop me off there again and I’ll stay a lifetime. If this isn’t the place that makes Iceland magical I don’t know what is. It’s just. Awe. Mazing. Your jaw drops and you can literally not contain your excitement as you explore the insanely green hill and cliff tops. Talk about photo ops! You can get epic photos standing pretty much anywhere in the canyon and a really cool experience available is to rent a kayak/canoe at the bottom of the canyon and paddle through the river. Just be wary of the weather, we visited in overcast weather (as you can tell in the photos) and really had to watch our step or otherwise plumet to our death off the edge of a cliff. It was still beautiful though. I can’t imagine wanting to go back anywhere else in the world more than Fraser canyon.
