If you or your loved one(s) suffer from allergies this post is for you! My husband gets really bad seasonal allergies especially during the spring and fall so we’re always looking for ways to reduce allergy triggers in the home. I found the following 8 tips really helpful so I wanted to share them with you today!

8 Ways to Reduce Allergies in the Home

  1. Keep the humidity below 50% (if possible). As much as I like to conserve energy and help the environment, Canadian summers are humid so we turn the air conditioning on when it start to get hot and run it all summer. It helps to significantly reduce the humidity in the home and there’s a lot less sniffles, itchy eyes and sore throats.
  2. Keep Windows and Doors Closed (again, if possible). I know not everyone has air conditioning, but if you do it’s the best way to combat allergies. Keeping windows and doors open for air flow is great but you’re also allowing potential pollens to flow into the home and stay put in your carpet and on your furniture and clothes.
  3. Use a Dehumidifier in the basement. These are the areas that contain the most moisture and can lead to potential mold issues. By using a dehumidifier you’re pulling out as much moisture from the area as possible and helping to reduce allergies there. Remember to empty and clean your dehumidifier often.
  4. Clean Your Dryer Vents. This is so so important as your clothes can contain pollens from outdoors as well as all the lint from drying can get into the air in your home if your dryer is not properly vented and cleaned on a regular basis.
  5. Try To Replace Carpets with Hard Surfaces. Of course this can be a costly undertaking, but if you own the home or if your landlord is willing to foot the bill replacing carpets with laminate, hardwood, tiles or a non-fabric flooring can significantly help reduce allergies. Allergens can get trapped in carpets and even with a powerful vacuum and regular steam-cleaning they can continue to cause allergies.
  6. Get an Air Purifier. You can purchase stand alone units for a specific room in the home or invest in an entire house purifying system, this will remove all kinds of allergens from the home and help to continuously clean the air in the home.
  7. Change You Air Filers. This is so important. Many people don’t realize that air filters should be changed from your furnace every 3 months. There are so many allergens and other dusts and danders that get caught in these filters, if you leave them in for long they won’t do a very good job catching those pesky allergens.
  8. Clean Your Home Often. Dusting and vaccuming is the best way to ensure you’re catching the dust, dander and allergens that your air purifier and filter didn’t. This will help clear the air and reduce allergies.

Using common sense and applying these suggested tips are great ways to reduce the allergens in your home!

What methods do you use to reduce allergens? Does anyone in your family suffer from allergies?
